The 43-year-old knuckleballer became the club's all-time innings-pitched leader in his previous start on Tuesday at Cleveland.

The all-time major-league career leader in innings pitched is Cy Young, with 7,356.

Wakefield joined Philadelphia's Jamie Moyer and the New York Yankees' Andy Pettitte as the only active pitchers to reach that mark.

Wakefield retired Shane Victorino on a fly to left for his 3,000th inning. The Red Sox put a message on the center-field board after the final out of the third.
