Tigers pick Rhymes as starting second baseman

Published Mar. 22, 2011 2:08 p.m. ET

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland says Will Rhymes will be his opening day second baseman.

Rhymes beat out last year's opening day second baseman Scott Sizemore. Rhymes batted .304 in 54 games last season.

All-Star second baseman Carlos Guillen remains sidelined with an injured left knee.

Leyland said Rhymes would bat second in the lineup. Sizemore was sent to Triple A Toledo on Tuesday.

Also sent to Toledo were outfielder Clete Thomas and pitcher Robbie Weinhardt. Pitcher Fu-Te Ni and catcher Max St. Pierre were sent to the Tigers' minor league camp.
