Study: Mets fans worst in grammar, spelling

Published Jun. 23, 2015 1:15 a.m. ET

The New York Mets rank first in the majors in errors -- by their fans.

That's according to a study conducted by the automated proofreading company Grammarly on behalf of The Wall Street Journal. Grammarly counted up the bad punctuation, misspellings and grammar mistakes in the comments section for each major-league team's website. Mets fans committed 13.9 errors per 100 words, barely edging Philadelphia Phillies commenters, who recorded 13.5.

Maybe it was posts such as this one that helped the Mets rank on top (our corrections in brackets):

The mets [Mets should be upper case] even if they do make it to the post season [postseason is one word] will lose because they have a liittle league [extra "i" in little, and Little League is capitalized because it's a proper noun] line up [lineup is one word] of hitters. The owners and front office dont [missing apostrophe in don't] really care whats [another missing apostrophe in what's] going on with there [should be "their"] team. If they had then they would of ["would have," not "would of"] made the trades by now.

To be fair, sometimes people who type in the comments sections of websites don't bother with capitalization or marks such as apostrophes. After all, they are in a hurry to get their thoughts down, and hitting that shift button on the keyboard can slow you down. So perhaps Mets and Phillies fans are just in a bigger hurry than everyone else. In recent years, each team has certainly given its fans plenty of reasons to forget their grammar.

Besides, what good does good grammar do for your team? The team whose fans turn in the cleanest-looking comments -- the Cleveland Indians, at 3.6 mistakes per 100 words -- hasn't won a World Series since 1948.
