The Braves and Marlins also were in the mix for Gload, the major-league leader in pinch hits last season. But Gload chose to join the two-time defending National League champions.

Gload becomes the Phillies' fourth free-agent signing of the offseason, joining third baseman Placido Polanco, infielder Juan Castro and catcher Brian Schneider.

The team continues to look for bullpen help.

Gload, who turns 35 on April 5, spent last season with the Marlins, going 21-for-66 (.318) as a pinch-hitter and batting .261-.329-.400 in 259 plate appearances.
