Report: Puig suffers bruised thumb

Published Aug. 4, 2013 1:00 a.m. ET

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig suffered a bruised left thumb when he made a diving catch in Saturday’s win over the Chicago Cubs and isn't in Sunday's starting lineup.

According to MLB.com, Puig wore a soft wrist brace after Saturday's game, which he was forced to leave in the eighth inning because of the injury. He is listed as day to day, and both Puig and manager Don Mattingly downplayed the severity of the issue.

Puig has been a rookie sensation since his early June call-up because of his highlight-reel catches and throws in the outfield and his prowess at the plate. In 53 games, he is hitting .376/.429/.600 with 11 homers, 25 RBIs and seven stolen bases.

Since Puig's call-up, the Dodgers are 37-17 and have climbed from last place (8 ½ games out) to first place (4 ½ games ahead) in the NL West.
