Reds' Votto won't sign for Cubs fans

Published Jul. 16, 2010 9:45 p.m. ET

Reds first baseman Joey Votto says he shows his feelings about Chicago Cubs fans by refusing to sign autographs for them.

Votto declined to congratulate Cubs outfielder Marlon Byrd following his impressive defensive play during the All-Star game Tuesday. Afterward, he told ESPN that he doesn't like the Cubs.

Votto clarified his remarks Friday, saying he has great respect for the Cubs. He added that he ''can't say as much for their fans.''

The Cubs clinched the NL Central title in Cincinnati in 2007, Votto's first season in the majors. Thousands of Cubs fans were in the stands at Great American Ball Park for that game. Votto still bristles at the memory and says he won't sign autographs for Cubs fans as a result.
