Red Sox head home with injury concerns in outfield

The Boston Red Sox have a couple of health concerns in their starting outfield.

Center fielder Mike Cameron and left fielder Jacoby Ellsbury will each be examined on Friday. Cameron was scratched from the lineup for Thursday's game at Minnesota, and Ellsbury is still feeling discomfort from the collision that has sidelined him since last Sunday.

The initial diagnosis for Cameron was a lower abdominal strain, but manager Terry Francona said after an 8-0 loss to the Twins that the team wants to make sure it's a muscular issue and not something else such as appendicitis.

``It's unusual,'' Cameron said. ``I haven't experienced anything like this before. I'm going to see the doctor tomorrow and try to figure out what's going on.''

Cameron is batting .217 with one extra-base hit and no RBIs in his first season with the Red Sox. He said he felt ``something'' during Wednesday's game.

``I just kept playing and all of a sudden it really came on,'' Cameron said. ``It's hard to breathe and kind of hard to even walk.''

Ellsbury missed his third straight game because of bruised ribs, hurt when he ran into third baseman Adrian Beltre while they chased a foul ball at Kansas City. Francona said Ellsbury was not as far along as the team hoped.

``I can't really take a deep breath without getting a sharp pain,'' Ellsbury said. ``It's better safe than sorry. We're going to see exactly what it is.''

Ellsbury tried to take some swings off a tee before the game, but he couldn't do much. He said he hoped to avoid the disabled list, but that he wouldn't play at home on Friday against Tampa Bay if he doesn't feel better.

``If I can't breathe right, I don't know if I should be playing,'' he said.

Bill Hall played center field, and Jeremy Hermida was in left for Thursday's game.
