Rays' Matt Joyce scratched from lineup

Published Jul. 17, 2011 8:04 p.m. ET

Tampa Bay's Matt Joyce was scratched from the starting lineup for Sunday night's game against the Boston Red Sox because of a sore right knee.

The first-time All-Star was injured when he fouled a ball off his right kneecap during the fifth inning of Saturday's 9-5 loss to the Red Sox. He homered off John Lackey one pitch later and played the remainder of the game.

Manager Joe Maddon said Joyce had some stiffness in the knee but might be available to pinch hit.

Joyce is batting .295 with 13 homers and 43 RBIs. He was replaced in the lineup by Sean Rodriguez.

Rodriguez started at second base, with Ben Zobrist moving to Joyce's spot in right field.
