SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Left-hander Joe Beimel and the Texas Rangers have agreed to a $1.5 million, one-year contract.

The deal, which is not guaranteed, was announced Friday. He can earn additional performance bonuses.

Beimel, 37, was 3-1 with a 2.20 ERA in 56 relief appearances last season with Seattle and held left-handed hitters to a .188 batting average.

He attended spring training with the Rangers in 2012, had a 4.50 ERA and was released. He then was diagnosed with a torn elbow ligament, had surgery and didn't return to the major leagues until last year.

Beimel is 27-33 with a 4.07 ERA in 23 starts and 600 relief appearances with Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Tampa Bay, Los Angeles Dodgers, Washington, Colorado and Seattle.
