Rangers scratch Wilson because of food poisoning

Published Apr. 14, 2010 11:31 p.m. ET

Texas left-hander C.J. Wilson was scratched from his scheduled start against Cleveland on Wednesday night after a bout of food poisoning hit the Rangers.

Manager Ron Washington turned to right-hander Colby Lewis to start instead.

Lewis found out he was starting on Tuesday after Wilson, catcher Taylor Teagarden, reliever Darren O'Day and two strength coaches felt the effects of food poisoning. Their conditions have improved, but Washington decided to hold out Wilson of the rest of the series as a precaution.

``I lost seven pounds in one day,'' Wilson said. ``Not much fun.''

Washington had hoped to use Wilson in the series finale Thursday, but changed plans and he will go with left-hander Matt Harrison. Wilson could return to the rotation during a three-game series in New York against the Yankees.

``As weak as C.J. is, there's no reason to push him,'' Washington said. ``With some off days in the schedule, we can shuffle the rotation a bit. We may start Scott Feldman on Friday. We'll have to talk it over.''

Feldman had been scheduled to pitch the second game in New York Saturday.

Wilson, a former closer, threw seven shutout innings against Toronto last week in his first start for Texas since 2005.
