Rangers' Harrison has 3rd surgery

Published Sep. 9, 2013 1:00 a.m. ET

Texas Rangers opening day starter Matt Harrison had his third surgery of the season Monday.

The left-hander never got back into the rotation after having two operations on a herniated disk in his lower back. The third surgery — for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome — was on his right side.

The procedure was the same Harrison had on his left side in 2009. A rib was removed from the upper chest to alleviate pain in the shoulder. TOS affects nerves that pass through the shoulder into the neck.

The Rangers said the operation was performed in Dallas by Dr. Greg Pearl and it went well. Harrison is expected to be ready for spring training.

Harrison made two starts this season before the back operations in a nine-day span, the last on May 1.
