Rainstorm delays start of World Series Game 3

Published Nov. 1, 2009 1:39 a.m. ET

The start of Game 3 of the World Series between the Yankees and Phillies is delayed by rain, the second consecutive year wet weather has affected the schedule in Philadelphia.

Andy Pettitte was set to pitch Saturday night for New York against fellow left-hander Cole Hamels in a game that originally was slated to begin at 7:57 p.m.

In an interview on Fox, Major League Baseball executive Jimmie Lee Solomon said the teams were waiting for a break in the weather, expected by about 9 p.m.

Baseball wanted to avoid starting the game and then having to stop it.

Last season, Game 5 of the World Series between the Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays was suspended for two days because of rain.
