Pirates put Cole on DL, recall Taillon to start against Mets

NEW YORK (AP) Gerrit Cole has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right triceps, leaving the slumping Pittsburgh Pirates without their ace.

Touted prospect Jameson Taillon was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis to take Cole's spot in the rotation. Taillon was set to make his second major league start Tuesday night against the New York Mets.

It's a disappointing - if not unexpected - blow to the Pirates, who had lost a season-worst five straight games. Cole left his start early last Friday against St. Louis because of triceps tightness, and it's unclear how long he's expected to be sidelined. Head athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk is scheduled to speak with reporters on Wednesday.
