Pirates assured of No. 1 pick in June draft

One of the Pittsburgh Pirates' worst seasons in 50 years has guaranteed them the No. 1 pick in the June amateur draft.

The Pirates, already assured of their first 100-loss season since 2001, cannot finish ahead of any other team in the overall standings. They last had the No. 1 pick in 2002, when they used it on right-hander Bryan Bullington. He did not win his first game in the majors until this season, while with Kansas City.

Pittsburgh picked second in the two of the last three drafts, taking third baseman Pedro Alvarez in 2008 and high school right-hander Jameson Taillon this season.

The Pirates, who lost 4-1 to St. Louis on Wednesday, have 102 losses going into their final four games at Florida starting Thursday. Their 104-loss season in 1985 was their worst since they dropped 112 games in 1952.
