Orioles LHP Gonzalez begins serving suspension

Published Jul. 26, 2011 11:02 p.m. ET

Baltimore Orioles left-hander Mike Gonzalez began serving a three-game suspension Tuesday, and will miss his team's series against the Blue Jays.

Gonzalez was fined and suspended for throwing behind Boston's David Ortiz in a July 10 game at Fenway Park. The incident came two days after Ortiz and Orioles right-hander Kevin Gregg traded punches on the field, inciting a bench-clearing incident.

Gregg and Ortiz were both fined and suspended for three games for their altercation. Orioles manager Buck Showalter was fined and suspended one game after Gonzalez retaliated.

Gonzalez initially appealed, but dropped the case after being told his penalty would not be reduced.

A nine-year veteran who has also pitched for Pittsburgh and Atlanta, Gonzalez is 1-2 with a 5.66 ERA in 37 games this season.
