New dad Gonzalez celebrates, pitches Nationals over Astros
VIERA, Fla. (AP) Gio Gonzalez, pitching for the first time since his fiancee gave birth to their first child, gave up one run over 4 1/3 innings as the Washington Nationals defeated the Houston Astros 5-3 Monday.
The couple's child was born last week on St. Patrick's Day. Gonzalez allowed five hits, walked four and threw a wild pitch but was able to get himself out of trouble.
Wilson Ramos homered and Ryan Zimmerman added a two-run double for Washington. Since undergoing Lasik eye surgery earlier this spring, Ramos is now 6 for 18 (.333) with two home runs.
Houston starter Scott Feldman worked on his changeup throughout his 3 2/3 inning stint and gave up three runs on five hits.
Colin Moran hit a two-run homer off Washington reliever Rafael Martin.
