Marlon Byrd's bat broke without hitting anything at all

Phillies' outfielder Marlon Byrd has whiffed plenty in his 13-year career because, well ... who hasn't? But a whiff that breaks a bat? That's uncommon.

However, on Sunday afternoon it happened. Byrd took a good cut at a fastball from Mets pitcher Jonathan Niese and his bat snapped, leaving Byrd with just the handle left in his hands. There was no contact whatsoever and it was just bizarre. Check it out:

As for the explanation to why it actually broke? Who knows. Best guess is that it probably cracked on a previous swing and nobody noticed. We love when strange things happen on the baseball field, so for that we thank you, Byrd.
