Marlins call up INF Donnie Murphy from minors

Published Jul. 3, 2010 3:59 p.m. ET

The Florida Marlins, looking for offensive help, have called up infielder Donnie Murphy from Triple-A New Orleans.

Infielder Brian Barden, who was hitting .179 in 28 at-bats, was designated for assignment.

Manager Edwin Rodriguez says he's looking more for offense than defense, especially late in games, from the utility infielder position.

The 27-year-old Murphy, who is with the team for Saturday's game at Atlanta, was hitting .277 with 12 homers and 35 RBIs with New Orleans. He hit .351 in spring training before he was sent to Triple-A.

Murphy is making his first appearance with Florida. He last appeared in the majors in 2008 with Oakland.
