Los Angeles Angels: Mike Trout primed for MVP

By John Farnham
The Los Angeles Angel’s reigning MVP, Mike Trout, is picking up right where he left off. With only thirteen days until opening day, Trout is leading the majors in most offensive categories.
He is getting a hit in just about 50% of his at bats with a batting average of .462. Behind him is Jose Abreu with a .459 average. Abreu had an amazing 2014. He had a .317 average, with 36 home runs, and 107 RBI. Expect the Abreu and Trout race to continue on to the regular season. These young players are the future of the game for decades to come and their numbers as of late reflect it.
Trout is only one run shy of leading the spring in runs scored with 13. Oakland’s Billy Burns holds the tentative preseason title with 14 runs scored. Baseball’s fifth best prospect, Kris Bryant, has made himself known this spring. He is fourth on this list with 11 runs scored and first on the RBI list with 15. It is hard to look at an unproven prospect such as Bryant and not expect this kind of spring performance bleed over into opening day and beyond.
Trout’s RBI numbers are demanding attention as well. So far this spring he is fourth on the RBI leader board. Ahead of him are Chicago White Sox’s Alexei Ramirez, Miami Marlin’s Michael Morse, and the Chicago Cub’s Kris Bryant. This is a high profile group that is expected to carry a lot of their teams weight on their back this year.
Bryant is one of the league’s most highly anticipated rookies, Morse just came off a World Series victory with the Giants, and Ramirez has been a staple in the White Sox organization for seven seasons. The high expectations that this group established make their spring stats more reputable.
As a team the Los Angeles Angels are having a modest spring. Their 11-8 record lands them in fifth place in the Cactus League standings. These games may not be worth anything in the grand scheme of things, but they will hopefully provide some hindsight for the latter days of the season. And if hindsight is 20/20, then expect Mike Trout to be on his way to another A.L. MVP in 2015.
