Indians acquire Jimenez from Colorado

Published Jul. 30, 2011 1:00 a.m. ET

The Cleveland Indians on Saturday acquired Colorado Rockies ace Ubaldo Jimenez, the Rockies confirmed Saturday.

The Indians’ package going to Colorado will include top pitching prospects Alex White, Drew Pomeranz and Joe Gardner and C/IF/OF Matt McBride. Pomeranz, who was scratched from his start at Class AA Akron on Saturday, is ineligible to be traded until Aug. 15 because he was drafted last June.

The deal is pending a physical examination on Jimenez to be performed by Cleveland medical staff tomorrow.

Jimenez made his scheduled start against the San Diego Padres tonight but Esmil Rogers warmed up in the bullpen even before Jimenez's first pitch and Jimenez was pulled after the first inning; he allowed four walks, two doubles and four earned runs. He immediately began shaking hands with and hugging teammates, then went into the clubhouse to pack up his locker.

“This was a very difficult decision for us to make, but our focus with this deal was to make our team better in the very near future and we feel like we were able to do that in this situation,” said Rockies Executive Vice President, Chief Baseball Officer/General Manager Dan O’Dowd. “We believe the timing of this deal also allowed us to maximize the value we were able to get in return.”

Jimenez, 6-9 with a 4.20 ERA, is seen by many as the top available pitching commodity leading up to Sunday’s non-waiver trade deadline.

Jimenez threw the only no-hitter in Rockies' history, in April 2010.

Pomeranz split the season between Class A and Class AA and was 3-3 with a 1.98 ERA in 91 innings.

At Triple-A Columbus, White was 1-0 in four starts with a 1.90 ERA. He is on the disabled list with a strained ligament in the middle finger of his right hand. He is on rehab assignment and should be activated shortly. He was in the big league rotation when he was injured, and was 2-1 with a 3.60 ERA in three starts for the Indians.

Gardner, a right-hander, is 7-8 with a 4.99 ERA at Class AA Akron.

McBride is hitting .297 with 14 HR and 53 RBI at Class AA Akron.
