Hochevar, Royals agree to $1.76M deal

Right-hander Luke Hochevar and the Kansas City Royals have agreed to a one-year contract worth $1.76 million, the same salary he had last year.

The deal, which includes a $50,000 bonus for making the All-Star team, enabled the Royals to avoid arbitration with Hochevar.

Hochevar generally has been a disappointment since getting taken with the first overall pick in the 2006 amateur draft.

He was 6-6 last year with a 4.81 ERA in 18 games, including 17 starts. A strained right elbow caused him to miss more than two months. He is 19-32 with a 5.60 ERA in 69 appearances for the Royals, including 65 starts.

Hochevar's 2010 salary was the maximum 20 percent cut from a $5.3 million, four-year contract that included a $3.5 million signing bonus.

Four Royals remain eligible for arbitration: right-handers Kyle Davies and Robinson Tejeda, first baseman Billy Butler and outfielder Alex Gordon.
