Giants fan critically injured after attack

Published Apr. 1, 2011 1:00 a.m. ET

Police were searching Friday for two men who beat and kicked a San Francisco Giants fan in the parking lot outside Los Angeles' Dodger Stadium.

Bryan Stow, 42, remains in critical condition after the beating, which occurred late Thursday night after the Dodgers' win, with his brother-in-law telling the Santa Cruz Sentinel that Stow had been placed in a medically induced coma.

"He's not doing too well," David Collins said.

"He's still unconscious and they just decided to put him in a medically induced coma.

"They are hoping the brain swelling will go down, but it hasn't and they are talking about removing one of his frontal lobes."

Police said Stow was struck in the back of the head by two men wearing Dodgers' clothing and after he fell to the pavement the men continued attacking him, kicking and hitting him.

Los Angeles police Sgt. Sanford Rosenberg said that the behavior of these fans was unacceptable.

"We can sit and talk for hours about fan mentality," he said.

"It's fun to talk about my team is better than your team, but when you cross the line like this, there's no excuse. I'm ashamed to see this."

Police have reviewed the surveillance video of the incident but are having difficulty identifying the two men among the large crowds.

They are described as being Latino men aged in their late teens or early 20s.

Two other Giants fans were also attacked in the melee, but not seriously hurt, myFOXla.com reported.

Police also made at least two arrests for public intoxication in the parking lot. That compared favorably to last year's opener, when the number of arrests for public intoxication reached 132.

"It is extremely unfortunate that this incident took place on what was otherwise a great day at Dodger Stadium for tens of thousands of fans," the Dodgers said in a statement.

"We're committed to having the most fan and family-friendly environment in baseball and will continue to make that a top priority.

"We are cooperating fully with authorities during their investigation and we wish this fan a speedy recovery."

Stow is a father of two who works as a paramedic, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
