Giants close to signing Tejada
The Giants are on the verge of signing free-agent infielder Miguel Tejada to a one-year contract, according to a major-league source.
It is not clear whether the Giants would use Tejada at shortstop or at third base. The team, after losing free-agent infielder Juan Uribe to the Dodgers, also has been pursuing a trade for Rays shortstop Jason Bartlett.
However, Bartlett will receive a raise from $4 million in arbitration and Tejada will earn $6.5 million, according to ESPNDeportes.com’s Enrique Rojas, who broke the story.
One source indicated that the Bartlett talks were still alive, saying the Giants still wanted him. Another suggested that the team probably could not afford both Bartlett and Tejada.
The Giants, though, are built around their pitching. Tejada turns 37 in May 25, and the Orioles moved him to third base at the start of last season. He returned to short only after getting traded to the Padres.
If Tejada plays third, it could jeopardize the future of Pablo Sandoval, the Giants’ third baseman for much of last season. Sandoval, however, has minor-league options remaining, and could start the season at Class AAA.
