Former AL home run champ dies at 87

Former major league outfielder Gus Zernial, who played for three teams over 11 seasons, has died. He was 87.

Zernial's daughter, Lisa Pearlstein, said he died Thursday from complications related to congestive heart failure. Services are scheduled for Wednesday.

Zernial led the American League with 33 homers and 129 RBI in 1951. He began that season with the Chicago White Sox, but spent most of that year with the then-Philadelphia Athletics after a trade.

The Beaumont, Texas, native hit a career-best 42 homers with Philadelphia in 1953 and finished with a .265 batting average, 237 homers and 776 RBI in his major league career, also playing for Detroit.
