First lady, Nationals to honor military families

Published Jun. 30, 2011 11:50 a.m. ET

Michelle Obama will join the Washington Nationals next Tuesday for a salute to military families when the team takes on the Chicago Cubs.

The White House says the Nationals have dedicated July 5 to a nationwide effort by the first lady and Jill Biden to rally the country to support military families. The effort is known as Joining Forces.

Children from military families will escort Mrs. Obama to home plate during pre-game ceremonies at Nationals Park in Washington. But she won't throw out the first pitch. That honor will go to one of the children.

Mrs. Obama will also join military families when fans recognize them during a third-inning tribute.
