Published Jun. 28, 2012 10:20 p.m. ET

Jacoby Ellsbury and Scott Podsednik are taking their first steps in returning to the Boston Red Sox.

Ellsbury and Podsednik will both begin rehab assignments in the Red Sox minor-league system on Friday. Ellsbury will be playing with the Red Sox rookie league club in the Gulf Coast League, while Podsednik will be with Triple-A Pawtucket. Both players will begin their rehab assignments at designated hitter.

Ellsbury is on the 60-day disabled list with a right shoulder injury suffered in early April sliding into second base. Podsednik has been on the 15-day DL since June 19 with a left groin strain.

Ellsbury will join outfielder Carl Crawford in the rookie league in Florida. Crawford is recovering from left wrist surgery.
