Dodgers sale set to be finalized

The record $2.15 billion sale of the Los Angeles Dodgers to the group led by basketball legend Magic Johnson was set to be finalized Monday.

Three people familiar with the process told the Los Angeles Times that no objections were filed Friday to the US Bankruptcy Court order approving the deal.

The deadline effectively represented the final hurdle in the soap-opera style saga for one of Major League Baseball's flagship franchises.

Guggenheim Baseball — the winning group led by Johnson, Stan Kasten and Mark Walter — was ready to transfer the money to outgoing owner Frank McCourt, two sources said.

Attorneys for Guggenheim, McCourt and MLB were finalizing documentation and were prepared to work over the weekend to guarantee the sale can be signed off before the Dodgers take the field Monday night in Colorado.

Of the money McCourt will receive, $131 million was earmarked for his ex-wife, Jamie McCourt, as part of the couple's divorce settlement.

Guggenheim Baseball beat out a group of some of the wealthiest businessmen in the country in the auction to land the Dodgers after Frank McCourt was forced to sell because of crippling finances.

The winning bid shattered the previous record sales price for a US sports franchise, which was held by Steve Ross, who purchased the Miami Dolphins for $1.1 billion three years ago.
