Damon draws ovation in return to Yankee Stadium

Johnny Damon has drawn a standing ovation in his return to Yankee Stadium.

The crowd began cheering when Damon came to the plate for the Detroit Tigers in the first inning on Monday night. Damon waved his helmet to the fans and turned to the New York dugout, where the Yankees applauded.

Damon starred for the Yankees during the past four years and helped them win the World Series last season. The 36-year-old Damon signed with the Tigers as a free agent during spring training.

The popular Damon greeted Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and former teammates during batting practice. He had plenty of handshakes, hugs and waves for Yankees officials, employees and fans before the game.

Damon says he's aware there's a chance he could traded before the Aug. 31 deadline for teams to set their postseason rosters. Even if he leaves, he says he'd like to be back with the Tigers next year.
