Choo breaks left thumb in loss to Giants
Cleveland right fielder Shin-Soo Choo is headed for the disabled list after breaking his left thumb when he was hit by a pitch in the fourth inning of a 4-3 loss to San Francisco on Friday night.
Choo appeared to get hit just above his right wrist with a 2-1 pitch from left-hander Jonathan Sanchez but team officials later confirmed the injury as a broken left thumb.
Choo fell face first to the dirt and remained there as a team trainer rushed out to check on him. He was eventually helped to his feet and paused momentarily along the first base line before walking off the field.
Choo, who had hit safely in 20 of his previous 26 games, is expected to be placed on the DL within 24 hours. Cleveland has called up Travis Buck from the minors to replace Choo.
Shelley Duncan pinch-ran for Choo and scored on Jack Hannahan's RBI single to give the Indians a 3-0 lead.
