Chicago White Sox giving slumping slugger Jose Abreu a day off

CHICAGO -- The Chicago White Sox are giving slumping slugger Jose Abreu a day off.

Manager Robin Ventura didn't put the Cuban rookie in the starting lineup for Thursday night's game against Boston.

Abreu is in a 1-for-25 rut. Ventura says the first baseman has "a lot going on" and that it's "the right time" to give him a break before the White Sox go on the road to Texas.

Abreu signed a six-year, $68 million contract in the offseason. He got off to a strong start for the White Sox with four home runs and 14 RBIs through 10 games, but has tailed off since then.

He went 0 for 6 Wednesday night, dropping his batting average to .217.

Paul Konerko got his second start of the season, batting fifth and playing first base. Adam Dunn will bat cleanup as the designated hitter.
