CHICAGO (AP) Jason Heyward got the first hit of the new major league season, a double in the first inning for the St. Louis Cardinals against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday night.

Heyward scored the first run soon after that, on a single by Matt Holliday off new Cubs ace Jon Lester at Wrigley Field. Heyward was acquired by the Cardinals in a November trade with Atlanta.

Lester, who signed a big free-agent deal with Chicago over the winter, threw a strike to Matt Carpenter on the first pitch of the game. The left-hander also got the majors' first strikeout when he fanned Jhonny Peralta in the first.

Heyward also doubled in his second at-bat leading off the third.
