Bruce off crutches, out of pain

CINCINNATI (AP) Jay Bruce was on hand to greet his Cincinnati teammates when they returned home Friday.

The Reds right fielder wasn't able to travel with them to Boston after arthroscopic surgery Monday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. He is expected to miss about a month.

''I feel great,'' Bruce said before Friday's game against Colorado. ''This is my second day without crutches. The pain is completely gone. There is still swelling, but there is no pain.''

Bruce was hitting .218 with three homers and 14 RBIs. His knee had been a problem for a while, he said.

''It happened gradually,'' he said. ''It has been off and on for a year. It was manageable before, but it got to the point that it was less manageable.''
