Boston gives catcher a one-year deal

The Boston Red Sox have re-signed catcher Jason Varitek for a one-year contract worth $2 million, according to multiple reports.

In 39 games as a backup to Victor Martinez last season, Varitek hit .232 with seven home runs and 16 RBI.

Free agent Martinez signed with Detroit last week.
