Ausmus to undergo back surgery

Published Apr. 15, 2010 2:43 a.m. ET

Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Brad Ausmus will have surgery on Thursday to repair a herniated disc in his back, and is expected to miss at least three months.

``I think that's just a ballpark figure on this type of surgery,'' manager Joe Torre said before Wednesday night's game against Arizona. ``It's tough. He had a little episode in spring training and I guess he had a little piece of the disc break off, and that's what they're going to deal with. He's in a lot of discomfort, sleeping and sitting.''

Ausmus, a three-time Gold Glove winner who turned 41 on Wednesday, is on the disabled list for the first time in his 17-year career.

Ausmus batted .295 last season in 36 games as Russell Martin's backup.
