Astros sign lefty Rowland-Smith to 1-year deal

The Houston Astros have signed Aussie left-hander Ryan Rowland-Smith to a one-year, $725,000 deal.

General manager Ed Wade announced the deal in a statement Friday.

Rowland-Smith went 1-10 with a 6.75 ERA in 27 games with Seattle last season, including 20 starts. He was 12-17 with a 4.57 ERA in 115 games over four seasons with the Mariners.

The 27-year-old Australian was originally signed by Seattle as a undrafted free agent in 2000 and made his big league debut on June 22, 2007.
