Astros close to extending Myers' deal

Published Jul. 31, 2010 1:00 a.m. ET

The Astros are close to signing right-hander Brett Myers to a two-year extension through 2012 with an option for '13, according to a Major League source.

The option will contain a vesting element, meaning it can become guaranteed if Myers reaches certain appearance thresholds, the source said.

The new deal will replace Myers' $8 million mutual option for 2011.

Several clubs expressed interest in Myers leading to the non-waiver deadline, but the Astros chose to keep the pitcher instead after trading right-hander Roy Oswalt to the Phillies. Myers and lefty Wandy Rodriguez will be the new anchors of the Astros' rotation.

Myers, who turns 30 on Aug. 17, is 8-6 this season with a 3.10 ERA.
