Astros' A.J. Hinch rooting for Kirk Gibson in battle with Parkinson's

Houston Astros manager A.J. Hinch has a history with Kirk Gibson, who announced publicly earlier this week that he's been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

When Hinch managed the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2009-2010, Gibson was his bench coach - and it was Gibson that assumed the role of manager when Arizona fired Hinch in 2010 (and held the position until late last season).

Hinch shared some thoughts on Gibson's news with Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle:

“Knowing Gibby, he will fight the fight as hard and as good as anybody,” Hinch said. “But really sad, sad day to hear of the struggles that are ahead for him. I reached out to him via text and just sent him my wishes. I didn’t expect to hear back from him and I haven’t. I know a ton of baseball people are doing the same. “But he’ll be in our thoughts and prayers. Certainly there are a lot of people around the world that suffer from this, and you hate to see anybody go through it. … Just takes you back and is a really, really heart wrenching situation.”

Needless to say, given the gritty demeanor and attitude displayed by Gibson throughout his playing and managerial career, Hinch says he knows he'll rise up to face this new challenge:

“He’ll fight. He will fight,” Hinch said. “Whatever that entails, he will fight.”
