Angels take a flier on veteran reliever Ramirez

In a low-risk move that could only pan out well for the Los Angeles Angels, the club agreed with veteran reliever Ramon Ramirez on a minor-league contract earlier this week.

Jeff Fletcher of the O.C. Register noted that the agreement comes with an invitation to spring training, where he could earn a spot in the bullpen with a strong showing.

Ramirez, 34, appeared in just seven games from 2014-2015 in MLB, though he did pitch full-time in Mexico during the 2015 season.

For his career, which includes parts of nine seasons with teams including the Baltimore Orioles, San Francisco Giants, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, Kansas City Royals and Colorado Rockies, Ramirez has a 3.42 ERA and 364 strikeouts in just under 435 innings of work.

An under-the-radar signing by the Angels, it could pay dividends if Ramirez is able to resume pitching like the reliever he was earlier in his career.
