ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Shortstop Andrelton Simmons has left the Los Angeles Angels' game against Tampa Bay in the third inning with an apparent injury.
Simmons appeared to injure one of his hands while diving to stop Evan Longoria's grounder Sunday.
He immediately left the game. Second baseman Cliff Pennington moved to shortstop, and Johnny Giavotella came off the bench to play second.
Simmons is one of the majors' best fielders, winning two Gold Glove awards with the Braves before they traded him to Los Angeles in the offseason. He has been a strong fielder in his first season with the Angels, although he made a throwing error Saturday in their loss.
Simmons has struggled at the plate, batting .219 with eight RBIs. He had a hit Saturday to end an 0-for-21 skid.
