Anderson to miss a year after surgery

Published Jul. 14, 2011 1:00 a.m. ET

Oakland A's lefty Brett Anderson underwent Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow Thursday and is expected to miss about a year.

Anderson had been on the 15-day disabled list since June 7 with soreness in his elbow. Up until this week the team had hoped the 23-year-old would be able to return this season without surgery.

Anderson saw Dr. James Andrews June 13 and received a platelet-rich plasma injection in his elbow in an effort to speed the healing process. The team said at that point Anderson would miss another six weeks.

Andrews performed the surgery Thursday morning in Pensacola, Fla., to repair the ulnar collateral ligament.

Anderson signed a four-year, $12.5 million contract with Oakland at the start of the 2010 season following a 2009 campaign in which he went 11-11 with a 4.06 ERA in 30 starts. Last season he was 7-6 with a 2.81 ERA, but missed a total of about three months because of elbow problems.

Anderson was 3-6 this season with a 4.00 ERA, culminating with two poor outings before he was placed on the DL.
