Richt may stick with Lambert 'all the way through'
Greyson Lambert's debut went about as well as could be expected, as Georgia's starting quarterback piloted the Bulldogs offense to two touchdown drives in the first three drives of the season and a 35-point lead by halftime.
While recording his radio show Monday, Mark Richt was asked about his quarterback competition and revealed that Lambert could lock up the starting job if he continues to play effectively for the Bulldogs:
“There are so many things that go into it and we watched so much practice film and observed them every day, not only on the field but in the meeting rooms,” Richt said. “We had to make a call and it was a close call. Greyson won it and won the opportunity to start the first game and he played well the first game as did Brice.”
“I mean, my guess is if he plays really good, he’ll be the starter all the way through,” Richt said. “But who knows what will happen? We’re just going to keep playing ball and trying to get the best players in the game, but he certainly did a nice job with his opportunities. Every ball that he threw had a good purpose, even the ones he threw out of bounds when there was no one open. A couple of balls got batted and the rest of them really were on the money. I thought he did a nice job there.”
With the talent on hand in Athens, the Bulldogs should finally win the East after a two-year drought from Atlanta. If Lambert can simply manage the offense and make a critical play or two when called upon, there's no reason for the team to finish anywhere but first in the division standings by season's end.
