This week's FOXSportsNorth.com Minor League Star of the Week is Cedar Rapids Kernels third baseman Edgar Corcino.
Corcino, a 23-year-old native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, has looked like a five-tool prospect all season. He's hitting .326 overall this season and tormented opposing pitching in recent days, hitting a staggering .545 (12 for 22) over a recent six-day stretch.
Here's a look at what Corcino and the rest of this week's minor-league stars did throughout Minnesota's farm system.
TRIPLE-A ROCHESTER
Player of the Week: OF Eric Farris
2015 stats: .248/.296/.309, 9 2B, 21 RBI
Recent highlights: Farris, a 29-year-old journeyman who enjoyed cups of coffee with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2011 and 2012, has hit like a seasoned veteran in recent days. From July 18-22, Farris hit .389 (7 for 18). That hot stretch included a 2-for-3 performance at the plate last Saturday, versus Lehigh Valley.
Pitcher of the Week: RHP Tyler Duffy
2015 stats (overall in minors): 6-7, 2.41 ERA, 123 1/3 IP, 109 K, 29 BB
Recent highlights: Duffy, a 24-year-old Texan, boasts a 2.26 ERA over his last 10 outings. A former fifth-round draft choice by the Twins in 2012 out of Rice, Duffy scattered four hits over 6 1/3 innings pitched on Tuesday versus Gwinnett, while yielding two runs, striking out five and walking none.
DOUBLE-A CHATTANOOGA
Player of the Week: 1B Kennys Vargas
2015 stats (overall in minors): .265/.383/.453, 6 HR, 16 RBI
Recent highlights: Vargas, who hit .245 in 47 games with Minnesota earlier this season, has handled his demotion to Double-A admirably of late. From July 17-21, the 6-foot-5, 290-pound slugger hit .357 (5 for 14). Last Saturday, the 24-year-old went 2 for 4 at Biloxi, belting a pair of solo homers.
Pitcher of the Week: RHP D.J. Baxendale
2015 stats: 4-2, 3.79 ERA, 78 1/3 IP, 71 K, 27 BB
Recent highlights: Baxendale, a 10th-round draft choice by the Twins out of Arkansas back in 2012, got the best of Biloxi on July 17. On that night, the 24-year-old went six innings, allowing three runs while striking out seven and walking just one opposing batter.
HIGH-A FORT MYERS
Player of the Week: OF Chad Christensen
2015 stats: .262/.325/.329, 30 RBI, 18 SB
Recent highlights: Christensen, 24, went on a tear from July 17-23, going 8 for 19 (.421) at the plate. He had three multihit games during that span, highlighted by a memorable Saturday. On that day, at Brevard County, Christensen went 1 for 2, with two runs scored, two walks and three stolen bases.
Pitcher of the Week: RHP Aaron Slegers
2015 stats: 7-5, 2.88 ERA, 106 1/3 IP, 71 K, 18 BB
Recent highlights: Slegers, at 6-10, 245 pounds, looks the part of an imposing pitcher, and he performed like it on Monday. In a 2-1 win over Jupiter, the 22-year-old former fifth-round draft pick out of Indiana went seven innings, allowed just one earned run, and scattered five hits while striking out five and walking none. Slegers, who has a 2.70 ERA over his last 10 outings, leads the Miracle in innings pitched this season (106 1/3).
LOW-A CEDAR RAPIDS
Player of the Week: 3B Edgar Corcino
2015 stats: .326/.371/.451, 11 2B, 27 RBI
Recent highlights: Corcino, a 23-year-old native of the Dominican Republic, boosted his overall batting average 26 points during a recent nine-day stretch. During a span from last Friday through this Wednesday, Corcino went 12 for 22 (.545) at the dish, with five multihit games.
Pitcher of the Week: RHP Trevor Hildenberger
2015 stats: 2-1, 0.77 ERA, 61 K, 0.66 WHIP
Recent highlights: The reliever was promoted to Fort Myers this week, in an emergency move. But it sounds like he's likely to stick with the Miracle. It's easy to see why; the 24-year-old reliever's stats simply jump off the page. He has allowed just five walks all year, and opponents are hitting just .159 against him. Last Saturday at Quad Cities, Hildenberger recorded his 14th save of the season, preserving a 3-2 Kernels win.
