It's true: 'Friends in Low Places' is likely done at The K

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Twitter speculation is true: The Royals are likely canning the sixth-inning tradition of playing Garth Brooks' 1990 hit "Friends in Low Places" at Kauffman Stadium, Royals vice president of community affairs and publicity Toby Cook confirmed by phone Friday.

"We just felt that 2014 was a good time to try something a little different there," Cook said. "It's been a long tradition and it had become sort of our anthem at Kauffman Stadium. But now we'll be looking for a new anthem."

The Royals are planning to hold a contest at each home game in the middle of the sixth inning that will allow fans to select a song from a list of three or more nominees. The winning song then will advance in bracket form until there is one winner.

"It'll be like the NCAA bracket where songs will advance on each side toward an eventual winner," Cook said. "The eventual winner will be our anthem the rest of the season."

Cook said that winner could even be "Friends in Low Places."

"You never know, but I'm sure it will start out in one of the brackets," he said.

"Friends in Low Places" has been played at Kauffman Stadium for numerous years and eventually became the official sixth-inning song in 2008.
