Rex won't commit to Hunter at tackle

Published Aug. 20, 2012 1:00 a.m. ET

Rex Ryan will not commit to Wayne Hunter as the New York Jets' starting right tackle after the offensive lineman struggled against the Giants on Saturday night.

Hunter was manhandled on three sacks of Mark Sanchez. He struggled most of last season as the starter, but the Jets still guaranteed his $2.45 million base salary for this year. Ryan said Monday that there's ''competition not just at the right tackle spot, but there is competition throughout.''

Ryan says ''we'll see'' if backup Austin Howard might get snaps with the starters in the Jets' next game against Carolina on Sunday night.

Ryan adds that he's ''not ready'' to declare anyone as ''definitely the starter,'' other than with top players such as Darrelle Revis, Nick Mangold and Brandon Moore.
