The New England Patriots have chosen Zoltan Mesko of Michigan, making him the first punter taken in the NFL draft.

They selected the 6-foot-5, 240-pound Mesko with the 19th pick of the fifth round Saturday. He averaged 42.5 yards per punt in college. Of his 243 career punts, 76 were downed inside the 20-yard line and 58 traveled at least 50 yards.

The Patriots punter the past three years, Chris Hanson, is a free agent.
