Yanks in World Series form with sweep of BoSox

If you don't like the Yankees, well, I hope you thoroughly enjoyed the last eight Octobers.

The most-loved, most-loathed baseball team in America appears on its way to winning a World Series in 2009.

Really, is there any other conclusion to be drawn, after what occurred at Yankee Stadium over the weekend?

The Yankees swept the Red Sox in a four-game series in the Bronx for the first time since 1985, and they didn't just beat them. They dominated them. They bullied them.

The way they always used to do it.

New York has a 6 1/2-game lead on Boston — the largest for any first-place team in baseball.

A summation: The Yankees have the best record in the majors, the most wins of any team since the All-Star break, and, of course, the biggest payroll. Something tells me this won't be a good year for those charming underdogs.

I could point out that the Red Sox will have a chance to make up ground at Fenway Park in less than two weeks, but let's face it: The Yankees aren't going to blow this.

Trust me: We're eight weeks away from a cascade of stories about CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Mark Teixeira anticipating their first October in pinstripes.

The Red Sox, once a near-certain postseason entrant for the sixth time in seven seasons, are now in very real peril of missing the playoffs. They are currently tied with the Rangers for the American League wild card, with the Rays lurking only 1 1/2 games back.
