Williams put on DL by Angels, Weaver activated

Angels right-hander Jerome Williams was placed on the 15-day disabled list two days after suffering an asthma attack.

Williams was admitted to a hospital after his start Monday night against San Francisco because of dizzyness and shortness of breath from the suspected asthma attack.

''I didn't feel any shortness of breath while I was pitching. I felt normal,'' he said Wednesday at his locker. ''It was probably a (combination) of asthma and anxiety. I felt dizzy and I just passed out. That's all I remember. It came out of nowhere. It was real scary. They told me a lot of things at the hospital, but I couldn't remember anything because I really couldn't breathe.''

The 30-year-old Williams lasted only 3 1-3 innings against the Giants, allowing four runs, seven hits and three walks. When he got back to the clubhouse, he felt dizzy and collapsed.

''We're just trying to figure what's going on and, take it day by day and see what's going to happen,'' Williams added. ''Hopefully later we'll find out more. I just took a test today, and I'm taking more tests tomorrow and the next day. The last time I had an asthma attack was probably when I was like 4 or 5 years old. Other than that, I'd never had one. I hope it never happens again.''

The move conveniently opened up a roster spot for Jered Weaver, who was activated from the DL to start against the San Francisco Giants. Weaver had been sidelined for 19 games after his back went out on him 12 pitches into his outing against the Yankees on May 28 at Angel Stadium.
