Vin Scully misses Dodgers' home opener

Published Apr. 10, 2012 1:00 a.m. ET

Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully missed the Dodgers' home opener for the first time in 35 years because of a cold.

Scully is likely to miss a few days while recovering from the cold, a source told FOXSports.com national baseball writer Jon Paul Morosi. It’s possible that he will miss the entire three-game series against the Pirates, which concludes Thursday.

For now, Charley Steiner is expected to call the game on television with color analyst Steve Lyons during Scully’s absence; Rick Monday, normally Steiner’s broadcast partner on radio, will handle radio play-by-play duties.

The 84-year-old Scully has been advised by doctors to rest and will miss the game against Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

Scully, who joined the Dodgers in 1950 and is the dean of major league baseball broadcasters, was preparing to announce the Masters golf tournament in 1977 when he last missed the team's home opener. He did announce the Dodgers' games at San Diego this season.

Scully usually does all of Los Angeles' home games.
