Unusual feeling for Cubs players as franchise finally becomes a buyer
The feeling in the Chicago Cubs dugout is different, much different these days. Usually resigned to being sellers at the trade deadline, this time Cubs players are giddy with excitement to see what gifts might be on the way.
High on the list are pitchers David Price and Cole Hamels, the latter of which Chicago will face on Saturday at Wrigley Field. Or will Hamels be a member of the Cubs by then?
“We’re used to selling right now,” Anthony Rizzo, told CSN Chicago. “There’s not guys saying: ‘Oh, where am I going? Where am I going? Where am I going?’ It’s more of a (feeling like): ‘Let’s just keep winning. Keep winning — and see what we do.’”
And that's a heck of a good feeling around Wrigley.
After a day off on Thursday, the Cubs are back in action at home for a weekend series against the down-and-out Philadelphia Philles. Taking advantage is paramount for the Cubs who, at 51-43, are only one-half game ahead of the defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants for the second wildcard slot.
There's plenty of barriers to a Price or Hamels deal getting done, but the Cubs also have targets elsewhere to strengthen the club for a critical stretch run. It's unclear where Chicago will ultimately turn, but just knowing the club is in the market to buy and not sell is a big boost to players.
