Topps suing over use of Mantle image

Published Aug. 14, 2011 1:00 a.m. ET

Baseball card giant Topps was suing Leaf Trading Cards, claiming that it dipped into its rival's illustrious back catalog to promote its latest line of cards, TMZ reported Sunday.

Topps filed the lawsuit in New York, alleging that an ad for Leaf's "2011 Best of Baseball" series was offering collectors bonus retro cards that feature iconic Topps cards, including Yankees great Mickey Mantle's rookie card from 1952.

A 1980 Topps Rickey Henderson card and a 1972 Topps Carlton Fisk card also feature in the ad, TMZ reported.

Topps wants the images to be dropped from the ads and is seeking damages, while Leaf denied wrongdoing.

"Leaf intends to vigorously defend itself against the allegations in this lawsuit," a spokesman said. "We anticipate a just result of this matter through the legal process."
